Digital Prosthetic Designer course
In September 2026, we successfully completed our first edition of the 11-day Digital Prosthetic Designer training program at the Dutch HealthTec Academy in Utrecht. This program was led by the expert instructors Henk-Jan van den Heuvel and Alex van Etten.
In February, we proudly launch the second edition. This time, it focuses entirely on working with Exocad instead of 3Shape.
During this intensive 5-day Digital Prosthetic Designer (DPD) program, you will be fully immersed in the world of digital prosthetic design using Exocad software. Under the guidance of our expert, Henk-Jan van den Heuvel, you will learn step-by-step how to design digital prosthetics with confidence and skill. It's also important to note that we plan to offer this DPD program again in the fall of 2026, but this time using 3Shape software.
We'll start with the absolute basics: what is CAD-CAM, where does its origin lie, what's the current state of the art, and what does the future hold? You'll learn about various materials and production methods—from milling, printing, and casting to understanding different workflows. We'll also cover the operation of scanners, printers, and milling machines in detail, including the advantages and disadvantages of each method.
We'll also focus on understanding data: how do you acquire digital data, how do you create it yourself, and how do you process raw data into usable designs? We'll teach you how to repair and optimize scans, create virtual models, prepare virtual extractions for immediate dentures, and delve into the various file formats and their applications.
We'll also refresh your general denture theory so you understand that the computer is merely a tool—your knowledge and input remain essential. Next, we'll delve into the software: from designing a simple crown, to placing trays and bite plates, and finally, fully designing an upper denture. We'll then build on this foundation with the complete Gysi setup and the Gerber setup, including detailed explanations. For advanced participants, we'll also focus on Class 3, Class 2, and crossbite cases as an added layer.
Finally, we'll prepare you for the final exam. We'll clearly explain the exam criteria, practice with a mock exam, and train you to work under pressure, so you can complete the program with confidence.
In short, the DPD program is a comprehensive, practical training program for anyone who wants to take the next step in designing digital prosthetics—from basic to advanced level.
However, the format of this training has been changed to create a more focused, practical, and effective learning experience: the DPD training with Exocad will take 5 full days instead of the previously mentioned 11 half days. The final dates have already been set:
Day 1 - February 27, Day 2 - March 13, Day 3 - March 20, Day 4 - March 27, Day 5 - April 17, which will also include the final exam.
